Buddha attained supreme enlightenment through meditation and then spent His whole life converting sentient beings. The Four Foundations of Mindfulness Sutra teaches a method of meditation to gain no-self, and to enter Nirvana.
Mindfulness
Mindfulness is when we always remember our practice, which leads to the disappearance of our thoughts (rather than the intentional elimination of them).
Here is the remembering the whole body, its impermanence and the breathing. Thanks to this remembering, we start to have fewer thoughts; hence our mind starts to be calmer. If we remember other things, we will have more and more thoughts, and it’s called the wrong thought. Remember only the three things above will help destroy our thoughts, and it’s called the right mindfulness.

The wrong thought is the remembering something, which makes the mind disturbed or even crazy.
But what is the remembering?
There are two types of remembering: one is to try to remember (or not forget), the other is that it is automatic without any effort.
Contrast with remembering is forgetting. Forgetting the practice causes the growth of our thoughts, or because having so many thoughts, we forget the practice. Both are correct.
Why when we are in the process of practice, our thoughts can lead us in the wrong way, and we forget our practice? It’s because we’re not blessed enough, cause of the wrong things we have done, or the wrong thoughts we have had. For our mindfulness to without any interruption, we must be greatly blessed and very ethical. We must reach the level of not having any wrongdoings and always see the danger in every small error (Buddha’s teaching).
