Buddha attained supreme enlightenment through meditation and then spent His whole life converting sentient beings. The Four Foundations of Mindfulness Sutra teaches a method of meditation to gain no-self, and to enter Nirvana.
What’s concentration we get in meditation for?
There are many meditation sects, and each sect has its different goal. One is to have the ability to separate one’s spirit from his body, one is to have the power of Qigong, one is to have the human energy capacity, one is to have the ability to predict the future, one is to have supernatural power, and one is to attain enlightenment to become Buddhas or Bodhisattvas and maybe more. But as Buddhists, we use our concentration to destroy our egos. Do not wish for anything else but just for our egos to be eliminated.
Our egos are not the same. When you are blamed or disparaged, if you get angry then you have a big ego and if not, then you have a small ego. Those who have big egos have their minds much oscillated and vice versa. If you can calm your thoughts, your egos will be reduced, so you will still feel peaceful when scolded; if not you will be annoyed.
No matter sects we follow (meditation or Buddha chanting), if our minds can be calmed then we should know that our egos are lowered; hence our virtue will be growing and our life will be better since we don’t pay much attention to trivial things. Those who do not have peaceful minds always go on thinking from this to that and are easy to get upset. If you want to destroy your egos, you must calm your minds first to realize every one of your thoughts arising. If our minds are still much fluctuated, they will still be controlled by our egos; hence we are easy to get angry when being blamed or insulted, if otherwise, our minds are still calm and peaceful then we should knơ that our thoughts cannot be controlled by our egos any longer. It is the main idea of our cultivation. We must keep our minds calm and pure in every moment in order not to be affected by any harsh conditions.
